However, I removed the module and have wired up the magnetic pickup directly to the magnetic input wires on the Sniper (pickup green --> Sniper green, pickup yellow --> Sniper purple). For the number of miles and reading about how these gears wear out, I was expecting a lot worse. Up/down shaft play on the new distributor is 0.021" <- this still seems like a lot to me, but I'm not sure

On a small- or big-block Chevy, the normal engine rotation turns the distributor rotor clockwise, so note that as the distributor is removed, it will rotate in the opposite direction (counterclockwise) as it rides up the helical cam gear teeth.
